Lesson 2

Lesson 2-
Objective: Have student read a story to me, retell the story and complete a writing sample (story reading and retell- completed; writing sample- did not complete)

Overview: Since my practicum is a special education placement, I was unable to meet with my student on time.  She had to stay in her general education classroom and do some testing and then came down late.  Since we got a late,I started out this lesson by asking my student to select a book of her choice from the room and read it to me.  She selected a book that she had been reading with her teacher a few weeks prior.  She read the entire book to me and I was rather impressed with her reading.  I liked that she would pause on some pages and tell me that she used the picture to help her figure out a word here and there throughout the book.  She seemed pretty proud of herself for figuring out some of the unknown words by looking at the pictures.  When she finished reading, I asked her to retell the story to me without reading it all again.  She did a pretty good job of doing this.  She hit all the main points but missed a few more minor events that occurred in the story.  I was intending on getting a writing sample from her today too but due to her late arrival, we did not have time to do this.

Student learned/ struggled with:  My student learned how to look at the pictures in a book to help figure out unknown words.

What I learned about myself as a teacher: Today, I learned that as a teacher you really do need to be flexible and not to get frustrated when you go more than one day without completing something.  If you are relaxed and confident about it, your student(s) will be too.
